100th Anniversary

Bethany’s story began in 1918, as the first World War was ending, and has continued for a century. Our story has had many twists and turns, ups and downs since then, but God has remained faithful… On October 27 and 28, we had a wonderful celebration!

At a packed house on the weekend of October 27-28 at both their Saturday Banquet and Sunday Worship Service, Bethany Baptist Church celebrated 100 years as a church. Bethany started in a home in 1918, and since 1920 has remained on the corner of Pape and Cosburn in East York. Today Bethany runs many programs for area youth, hosts a weekly food bank, and serves the needs of its people and the surrounding community.

To celebrate their 100th, Bethany welcomed Dr. Tony Campolo as their Anniversary preacher last weekend, Oct. 27-28. Tony has written 35 books and spoken to millions of people all over the world for over 40 years, flying in from Philadelphia for the occasion. Tony made the crowd laugh – and be moved — on Saturday, including telling a story of going by mistake to the funeral where only he and the deceased widow attended. On Sunday Tony ended his dynamic sermon with his most famous story, “It’s Friday, but Sunday’s Coming!”, which was followed by a standing ovation.

At both events, past members mingled with present members, friends and family guests were introduced to the living history of Bethany. All people were inspired by the uplifting music, a video montage of “Bethany Though the Years,” and special greetings by politicians from all three levels of government. As Bethany now moves into its second century, the weekend will be a lasting memory of hope, faith and love going forward.
